The whole group spent that day resting. Evan later found out that Takashi was looking for him in the town. They all had deserved a break.
At dusk, the door to the cottage was in danger of being thrown open. There were men on the other side trying to get into the cottage!
Takashi, being the light sleeper he was, woke up immediately after the first knock. He woke up the remaining members of his group and they gathered their weapons.
Evan creeped out of the bedroom and peered out the window. He was the youngest, therefore the stealthiest. He gasped at what he had saw.
Scrambling back to the room his friends were, he reported his findings. "The village guards are here."
"How?" Akira asked.
Haku answered," Takashi may have blown his cover while going into town."
Takashi glared at him. "Don't blame this on me!"
Haku shrugged. "It's the only possibility."
"Or Evan, on his day out, may have led the guard here." Takashi suspected, eager to blame someone else.
"Why would I do that? We made a deal! You're keeping your end of it very well, so why would I break my promise?" Evan responded quickly.
Takashi still eyed him suspiciously. "There's a great deal of money on our capture, you know."
"How would I know that?" Evan cried. "I wasn't even in town yesterday!" Evan covered his mouth as soon as those words left his mouth.
Lucky for Evan, the guards were more intensely pounding on the door. Takashi, Akira, and Haku all headed for the side door. Haku, who had immediately befriended Evan, and was very close friends with him, left the door open for his escape.
"God bless him." Evan murmured, a habit he still kept, as he sprinted out the door.
Eventually, Evan caught up with the group. They were at the bramble wall, making camp for the night. Takashi and Akira didn't even look up from the fire as he came close. Haku only managed a half-hearted grin.
"So, what did you say about not going to the village yesterday?" Akira asked.
"Um..." Evan wrecked his brain for an excuse.
